Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
