England along with Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
