Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Premier Place.

At first glance, this work could seem more like a difficult academic quiz rather than the latest popular music record by an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Split across four separate movements and performed in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the perspective of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the stakes are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is an essential spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The track immediately segues into the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor wish to know—what you is going to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally distinct point from where it began. One moment examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic work starts out dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

A key balancing act on the album involves navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in English builds on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat is repeated on a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
